The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing.  Isaiah 35:1-2a

A Message from Our Pastor

I have said it before, but I love that God blesses us here in  Virginia, and more specifically in the village of Orlean, with the wonderful and beautiful gift of the four seasons of the year.  We are emerging from a white (too much white for most of us, I fear) and challenging and difficult ---but amazing in its own way ---winter --- to the gift of spring, of new life and rebirth and renewal.  I am always energized as I view the emergence of still another spring season that testifies to the glory and greatness of God and all that He has created and given to us.

Of course, spring also brings with it the Lenten season and culminates in our Holy Week and Easter celebrations.  This year, Holy Week begins on March 28 as we observe Palm/Passion Sunday and continues through our Good Friday service and culminates in our Easter Sunrise and Easter Day services. The birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus is the solid underpinning for our faith, and I encourage everyone to participate purposely in these important days of worship and reflection.  I further encourage and challenge you to examine yourself and your beliefs and your faith, and to share that with family and friends and those who God will place in your life and on your journey.  As I thumb through my calendar, I cannot help but notice that my mother’s eighty-ninth birthday is on Good Friday this year, and it causes me to pause and reflect on both the great sacrifice that Jesus made for me, as He did for you, and for a life that continues to be such a wonderful gift to my family.

A few other important dates for your calendars please and more information will follow for some of them that are still in the planning stages.

April 11, 2010:   Pastor Parish Relations Committee (PPRC) and Administrative Council meetings after worship

April 16, 2010: Concert performance at 7:00 p.m., by Brent Vernon ; Christian songwriter, singer and ventriloquist.  Based in South Florida, Brent is touring our area and we are very pleased to include Orlean United Methodist Church as one of his stops.  More information will be provided as/if it becomes available.

May 8, 2010:  Our SIXTH annual Praise and Worship service .  Praise music, testimony and fellowship.  This is always a great evening.  More information to come, but please plan on attending.

May 23, 2010:  Because of some vacation plans, Jim and Eileen will be away on the fifth Sunday of this month, May 30.  We are in discussions with Mt. Morris Baptist Church about moving our “Fifth Sunday” joint worship service to May 23, 2010.  Mt. Morris will be hosting this service, and as always it promises to be powerful and uplifting with praise and worship and fellowship with our brothers and sisters at Mt. Morris , and perhaps other local churches as well.

June 13-16, 2010:  2010 Virginia Annual Conference at the Norfolk Scope in Norfolk, Virginia.  Eileen and I, and hopefully your Lay Leader, Carol Payne, will be attending.  The Reverend Larry Thompson will replace The Reverend Dr. David Forrest as the Winchester District Superintendent during this Annual Conference.

June 28-July 9, 2010:  Local Pastor Course of Instruction at Wesley Seminary.

A busy schedule to be sure, but after all, Orlean United Methodist Church may be small in stature and size, but we have a big heart for worship and for community and for our faith. I am blessed and grateful to be your pastor and I look forward to continuing our faith journeys together.

It is only with the help of His grace that we are able to persevere in spiritual contemplation with endless wonder at His high, surpassing, immeasurable love which our Lord in His goodness has for us.  (Julian of Norwich )

God loves you and so do I.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Jim

Food Pantry

During the first quarter, we were able to help one family with food and we helped one family with a utility payment from the Pastor's Discretionary Fund. In 2009, escrip donated $157.04 to the Food Pantry fund; thanks to everyone who used their Bonus Club Card at Safeway.

Prayer Chain

Carol Payne is updating the church’s prayer chain to include new members and new phone numbers; the prayer chain is an effective way to disseminate information among the congregation.  If you would like to participate, please mail the information on the enclosed form to Carol at the church address (located at the top of the newsletter), call her (364-6238), or e-mail her at orleanwebmaster@yahoo.com.  Please note that e-mail is not required to be included on the prayer chain but serves as another way to communicate with each other.
