He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?  Micah 6:8

A Message from our Pastor

Thomas Edison’s laboratory was virtually destroyed by fire in December, 1914.  Although the damage exceeded $2 million, the buildings were only insured for $238,000 because they were made of concrete and thought to be fireproof.  Much of Edison’s life’s work went up in spectacular flames that December night.

At the height of the fire, Edison’s 24-year old son, Charles, frantically searched for his father among the smoke and debris.  He finally found him, calmly watching the scene, his face glowing in the reflecting, his white hair blowing in the wind.

“My heart ached for him,” said Charles.  “He was 67 – no longer a young man – and everything was going up in flames.  When he saw me, he shouted, ‘Charles, where’s your mother?’  When I told him I didn’t know, he said, ‘Find her.  Bring her here.  She will never see anything like this as long as she lives.’”

The next morning, Edison looked at the ruins and said, “There is great value in disaster.  All our mistakes are burned up.  Thank God we can start anew.”

Three weeks after the fire, Edison managed to deliver his first phonograph.

(Great Value in Disaster from the Sower’s Seeds; quoted from “A 3rd serving of Chicken Soup for the Soul”)

Thank God we can start anew.  Indeed!

As we enter into a new fall season, there is new life in our congregation.  Exciting new opportunities for service will present themselves.  The new fall season will bring with it new adult Sunday School classes, an exciting Advent season, and new opportunities to share our faith and to be part of the Body of Christ here in Fauquier County and in our little village of Orlean.

Perhaps our brother Peter says it best in his First Epistle to believers facing persecution throughout the Roman empire:

“Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for:

            All flesh is like grass

and all its glory like the flower of grass.

            The grass withers,

                        and the flower falls,

but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

“Since you have been born again,” Peter writes…….. Thank God we can start anew.  Indeed!

Remember, God loves you and so do I.                         Pastor Jim
